Industrial action by the Rail, Tram and Bus Union (RTBU) in Sydney has caused major disruptions to the city's train network. Train drivers are running trains at significantly reduced speeds, and some drivers are refusing to work, leading to widespread cancellations and delays.
Industrial action from the rail union is causing widespread disruptions across Sydney 's train network after negotiations between the union and the state government collapsed. The Rail, Tram and Bus Union (RTBU) triggered the industrial action on Friday morning, with train drivers operating at a reduced speed of 23 kilometers per hour slower than usual in areas where the speed limit is over 80 kilometers per hour.
This action followed the breakdown of negotiations, which occurred when the union requested a last-minute $4500 bonus payment for every rail worker. The NSW government stated that this bonus was never part of their offer and that the union's counteroffer did not include it. The government spokesperson emphasized that they are exploring all available options, including urgent legal action.Adding to the disruption, union officials instructed drivers that if the government refused to pay participating workers, they were allowed to simply not show up for work. This directive led to hundreds of service cancellations by 7:30 am, with delays and cancellations affecting most lines, particularly the Blue Mountains line, T1 North Shore and Western Line, T2 Leppington and Inner West line, T9 Northern line, and the T3 Liverpool line. Commuters have been advised to avoid non-essential travel and consider alternative forms of public transportation.
