Bus journeys cancelled due to driver shortages are in excess of 1200 trips daily across just four privatised Sydney regions on an average weekday in July, union figures supplied to theFigures for Region 9 buses, which cover the eastern and south-eastern suburbs and are operated by Transdev John Holland, show 280 cancelled trips on one day from a staff shortage of almost 100 drivers.
All up, the state has 3000 fewer bus drivers than in 2020, according to a report in News Corp newspapers. Bus NSW executive director Matt Threlkeld said COVID-19 and an ageing workforce were the factors responsible. The Fair Work Commission dismissed the NSW government’s application to suspend the industrial action for 10 weeks, rejecting “inexplicable” claims that it was harming the state’s economy.
