Sydney is facing a heightened risk of blackouts on the hottest November day since 2020 in a stark demonstration of the increasing unreliability of the ageing coal power fleet.
Power-generation units at several of the state’s coal power plants are offline for maintenance and breakdowns, while demand is soaring because of the high demand for air-conditioning as the temperature is set to hit 34 degrees in the east of the city and 39 degrees in the west.
“AEMO remains focused on maintaining electricity reliability in both NSW and Queensland this week, as high temperatures are expected to drive strong energy demand amid significant generation unavailability in NSW,” a spokesman said on Tuesday.“If electricity supply forecasts deteriorate, AEMO will take all necessary measures, including the activation of off-market reserves, to ensure supply reliability.
