The Harbour City has resumed its place near the top of The Economist’s annual liveability rankings, but one factor is keeping us from beating that other Australian city
Sydney has regained its place among the world’s most liveable cities, ranking fourth only behind Vienna, Copenhagen and, yes, Melbourne onThe rebound, following a two-year spell outside the top 10, results from the healthcare system no longer being stretched by COVID-19 and the removal of pandemic restrictions on daily activities.
While liveability surveys are notoriously subjective, The Economist Intelligence Unit attempts to rank cities using a weighted index that measures stability and safety, healthcare, infrastructure, education, culture and environment. Canadian and Swiss cities completed the top 10, as usual – Vancouver, Zurich, Calgary, Geneva and Toronto – along with the Japanese city of Osaka. The index favours middle-ring cities over the big global hubs such as New York, London and Tokyo – or the cities in Western Europe “hit by strikes”, Hansakul said.
But the temptation to compare Australia’s two biggest cities proves difficult to resist. Powerhouse museum boss Lisa Havilah said“We definitely should be ahead of Melbourne on arts and culture – and climate!” she said. “There’s a breadth of practice across the creative industries that I think is very distinctive to Sydney.”
