A new book, Retro Sydney 1950-2000 by Nathan Mete, shows the 'vibrant and exciting coming of age of Australia's first city'. The book was put together by civil engineer Mete, 31, who runs Instagram page Retro Sydney.

An illuminated Harbour Bridge is the backdrop for fireworks to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of Federation in Australia that January.

Mete said since starting the Instagram page, he had encountered some of the people linked to the photos. Notably, the street is fully open to traffic — the Regimental Square memorial, which is there now, was not completed until 1976. A state banquet was even held for Queen Elizabeth II during the 1954 royal tour in the restaurant of the Elizabeth Street shop.Looking from the foreshore at Hunters Hill, the sheer size of the arch construction on the new Gladesville Bridge can be seen in this photo."Many of the workers who built the bridge were 'new Australians' who, like my grandparents, emigrated to Australia during the 1950s and 1960s for a new life away from the UK and Europe," Mete said.

"In that shot there's a woman smoking a cigarette, other that that it's exactly the same," Mete said.Queen Elizabeth II visited Bankstown Civic Centre as part of that year's royal tour.
