Sydney's new light rail network appears to have survived its first major test, following a mixed debut weekend. 9News
By 3pm on Sunday some 115,000 people had ridden the tram service, with 80,000 on Saturday alone across 155 services between 10am and 1am.
The breakdown saw services out of action for some 40 minutes after a tram stopped at a bend in the track just before 2pm, blocking lines in both directions."Having carried 150,000 people over the weekend, that is just gangbusters, off the charts, so we will see people settling into their rhythm today," Transport Minister Andrew Constance said this morning.
"Ultimately, we will see people trial it, and work out the best way in terms of their movements in and around the city." "Yeah some people catch it all the way and yeah in due course you'll start to see the travel times pick up as people get used to getting on and off the trams, pressing the doors those type of things."Opposition leader Jodi McKay yesterday said the "good will for stuff-ups" is gone after the construction of the network was plagued by delays and cost blowouts.
