My neighbourhood has been taken over by the French. They’re storming the bastions, although it’s nothing to do with Australia ditching their submarines.

My neighbourhood has been taken over by the French. When I moved to Sydney’s Kings Cross neighbourhood four years ago, the attraction was not only its history as the heart of Sydney’s bohemia and sleaze, with its Soho-like mixture of strip clubs and artists, drag queens and crime lords, but also its diverse population, housing both the city’s richest and its poorest.

There’s an inbuilt reality check - no matter how well you are doing, that person who is homeless could be you with a bit of bad luck or bad health. The legendary Wayside Chapel and the Catholic church St Canice do a remarkable job of looking after the homeless, unemployed and distressed. And I see a lot of compassion from my fellow residents to those who are out of luck.Kings Cross is not a suburb of Sydney but the name of the area. Potts Point, or colloquially PoPo, is the suburb.

Much of the gentrification is due to well-to-do retired people from the suburbs relocating to the neighbourhood, lured by the cafes, which spill out onto the main drag of Macleay Street and around the El Alamein fountain in the square. Sometimes it looks like a cruise ship has deposited its passengers at the cafes, there are so many grey-haired people hanging around drinking coffee.
