There will be free rides on trains and no fines issued under industrial action that authorities fear will choke Sydney ’s rail network and cost taxpayers millions of dollars. Trains will start running 24-hours a day from midnight on Thursday through to Saturday night, but transport officials are already navigating an avalanche of union work bans.
Sydney’s train network hit with massive work bans. The Rail, Tram and Bus Union plans to occasionally leave Opal gates open, refuse to hand out fines and has banned working from home and attending the office. The distance train crews can travel will be cut, too. “They will eventually strangle our network and make it harder and harder to run trains,” Transport Minister Jo Haylen said. The action is expected to cost taxpayers $1.
