The comments put him at odds with his own navigator, Chris Lewis, who said on Christmas Eve that he believed his crew had a chance. At a briefing before the race began, Bureau of Meteorologist forecaster Gabrielle Woodhouse said the fog would largely clear by the time the race began – at 1pm – but crews would be affected by it as they moved down the coast.“It looks like it’s going to be relatively sunny by race start,” she said. But she added it was “likely that we’ll still see fog persisting down the South Coast of NSW tonight.
