Individual groups at a Sydney University demonstration kept below 19 in number, stayed apart and each was apparently protesting against slightly different issues. Then police declared that the different groups had, in fact, a common purpose | ebooktim
The university protest was well-organised, strategically planned but, in the end, wrong-footed by police.
Then they declared that the different groups had, in fact, a common purpose and exceeded COVID-19 separation recommendations.Student observers estimated that 10 to 15 students were each fined $1000 for public order offences and one was arrested. Isobel Maish, studying government and international relations told a small group of students there was no reason for the staff cuts being introduced, she said, under the guise of austerity.
"The small groups all had distinct political intents and we don't believe it contravened the meeting for a common-purpose requirement," he said.
