A Sydney disability support worker who was told by doctors that she was experiencing signs of menopause fronted hospital in “agonising” pain one night to learn she had Stage 3 ovarian cancer.that in May 2019, her menstrual cycle went “haywire”. It was the first sign of the “silent killer”.“I was referred to a gynecologist who tried an IUD and unfortunately, my body rejected it instantly and I got sepsis. That was pretty horrific.”Jane prior to her diagnosis in 2018.

Jane had experienced months of excruciating abdominal pains and had gained a large amount of weight despite living a very healthy and active lifestyle. The symptoms were dismissed as “typical of perimenopause”. A CT scan revealed a 4kg tumour in her left ovary that had become so large that it was pushing against her other organs.Jane immediately after the operation in February 2021.Other scans revealed it had also spread to the lymph nodes around her stomach, kidney and pancreas.

Following her surgery, Jane transitioned to six months of weekly chemotherapy and thankfully entered remission in November. She gets a scan every three months to monitor her condition.Jane said she doesn’t blame anyone for her late diagnosis but urges other women to “be proactive and trust your gut”.

Jane encouraged other women to lean on their support networks, but stressed treatment “isn’t as terrifying as it was years ago”.Breakthrough drugOvarian cancer affects about 1500 Australian women every year. Just one in four will survive.
