Sydneysiders rally for abortion rights after Roe v Wade shock | Millie Muroi
Protesters are calling for free, safe, legal and on-demand abortions in a rally to defend Australian abortion rights on Saturday at Town Hall.
She said that while a majority of Australians supported abortion rights, the US showed that an organised and influential minority could act in a way that was “out of kilter with popular opinion”. “The rights that were rolled back were chipped away slowly and deliberately for years. That’s why we must remain vigilant, keep up the fight for accessible and free abortion care and take to the streets to be clear that our reproductive rights are not up for debate.”
In NSW, abortions can be performed at up to 22 weeks’ gestation, after which two doctors must approve the procedure. A surgical termination of pregnancy under 12 weeks costs about $470 with a Medicare card.
