Bird flu spreads to humans by someone having close contact with infected birds
Cases of human infections of bird flu in the UK have now doubled to four following two more recent cases, officials have confirmed. Bird flu, or avian flu, is described as an infectious type of influenza that spreads among birds. In rare cases, it can affect humans.
However, the NHS states you can't catch bird flu through eating fully cooked poultry or eggs, even in areas with an outbreak of bird flu. But, British health advisors said it would react quickly if there was any detection of a bird flu epidemic in the UK. The NHS states that plans are in place to manage any suspected cases of bird flu in the UK, with H5N8 and H5N1 bird flu have been found in some poultry, other captive birds and wild birds in the UK. H5N6 has also been found in some wild birds in the UK, but this is a different strain to the H5N6 virus that has infected some people in China.
"As of 10 July 2023, 144 individuals from eight infected premises have been tested through enhanced surveillance of poultry workers."
