But now a pair of major fast-food chains — one of them a puro San Antonio-born venture — are duking it out over who can marry the two food styles into a one-size-fits-all amalgam.
Both sandwich layers of ground beef and refried beans between crispy tortillas and stack those with cheese, vegetables, sauces and other ingredients. While they're sold in packages that resemble pizza boxes, both are closer to an overwrought tostada, despite the"pizza" marketing hook. I'm convinced Taco Bell only has about five ingredients in the kitchen, and it endlessly reconfigures those into new products. The Mexican Pizza does nothing to challenge that hypothesis. Taco Bell's distinctively flavored ground beef established the base for this flavor profile, layered with refried beans between a pair of grease-stained tortillas.
Taco Bell did quarter the Mexican Pizza before serving, making the dish fairly easy to attack. With a squirt of sauce, it provided a classic Taco Bell taste in a different format.
