Rory Angelotta, 43, was reported missing when he failed to show up for Christmas dinner.

Placer County Sheriff's Office

A Truckee man who went missing on Christmas has been found dead three miles from the edge of the ski resort where he was last seen. Rory Angelotta, 43, scanned his lift pass at the Comstock Lift on Christmas Day around 11:30 a.m., shortly after making a phone call near the Northstar Ski Resort. Angelotta, who was the general manager of ski shop Surefoot at Northstar, moved to Truckee from Colorado in October, but was described as an"avid and experienced" skier.

When Angelotta failed to show up to Christmas dinner with friends, they reported him missing to the Placer County Sheriff's Office. Deputies found his car was still in the Northstar parking lot, but because of historic snowfall in the region that weekend, searchers were unable to find tracks or evidence of Angelotta's whereabouts.

The sheriff's office cited"significant challenges" in the search due to closed roads and continuing snowy weather, but over 200 people looked for six days before calling off the hunt. On Saturday, search-and-rescue volunteers found Angelotta's body half a mile from a residential neighborhood near Schaffer's Mill Creek, three miles from the edge of Northstar and beyond the boundaries of the initial search.
