In July, Taiwan held its annual Han Kuang military exercises featuring scenarios that were a little different from previous editions.
At Taiwan’s main international airport, a drill was held for the first time as dozens of soldiers mimicking an enemy force flew in on helicopters - with other anti-landing exercises also held at the port of Taipei and a nearby beach.
In the first half of the year, some 850 Chinese planes have flown into the ADIZ according to experts, while dozens of PLA ships have sailed in the waters around Taiwan, both dramatic increases from last year. While it is true that Ukraine has put up a much greater fight than expected after Russia invaded in February 2022 and even regained some territory, the current situation on the ground as well as the differences between Taiwan and Ukraine might be reasons for concern.
Unlike Ukraine, the island has no hinterland for its forces to mass away from the front lines or for its civilians to flee to. Earlier this year, Taiwan’s Defence Minister admitted the whole island was vulnerable to Chinese attacks and the east coast, which faces the Pacific, could not serve as a safe shelter for forces anymore.
