Intel’s Europe chief Frans Scheper says there will be a ‘huge impact’ and a ‘major crisis’ for the industry if Taiwan’s chip-making exports are cut off by Beijing.

: “If you think about mobile phones, 80 to 90 per cent of chips are coming from Asia, from that specific area.

“We are making major investments in Europe and in North America to get more balance,” Mr Scheper said.But investment will take years to pay off and Mr Scheper said: “If there is a short-term crisis, there’s not much you can do in that sense, so that would have a major impact.”on a range of issues, including the climate and military, after the trip by Ms Pelosi. She is the most senior US politician to visit Taiwan in 25 years.

Robert Tsao, the Taiwanese founder of United Microelectronics Corporation, pledged $US100 million towards his country’s defences on Friday as he called on citizens to resist the “evil” Chinese Communist Party.
