A Taiwanese woman has been charged with the attempted murder of an Australian exchange student after allegedly poisoning his food and drinks with rat poison for months. The 23-year-old student, Alex Shorey, was studying in Taipei when he became critically ill. Prosecutors say the woman, Yang, laced his food and drinks with bromadiolone, a rodenticide, and amlodipine, a blood pressure medication, between March 24 and May 2, 2023. Shorey suffered from severe symptoms including stomach aches, diarrhea, nosebleeds, and blood in his urine.

However, Yang continued to spike Shorey's food with bromadiolone as well as the blood pressure medication amlodipine, hindering his recovery from the poisoning.Prosecutors revealed Yang also allegedly deceived Shorey’s father into signing a form denying permission to place him in intensive care, against doctors’ advice.
Shorey’s mother found an empty bottle of the rodenticide at Yang’s home on May 1 when packing her son’s things.
