Getting firearms out of the hands of dangerous people will help prevent the deadly tragedies that spark attacks on the Second Amendment.
Naveed ShahTen years ago this month, 13 Americans died and more than 30 were wounded when one of our own opened fire at Fort Hood.
I'm a gun owner. Many of my friends, family and neighbors are gun owners. As a veteran, I treat firearms with care and respect. In the military, I took my weapon to the range to shoot, made sure it was clean and then returned it to the arms storage room at the end of the day. Even while deployed to Iraq, we checked and double checked to make sure weapons were on safe and cleared of ammo when not in use.
We should look at safe storage laws, such as those advocated by the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Brady Campaign's"End Family Fire." Storing weapons safely, as well as even mandating that sheriff's departments conduct regular inspections to ensure it, isn't a high price to pay for any of our children's lives.
