As the mud army heads up and the clean-up begins in earnest, people affected by the flood disaster are being urged to also take care of their mental health.
Everyone is being urged to be aware of their mental health while dealing with the aftermath of the flood disaster across south-east Queensland and NSW.
“In any traumatic event, people run on adrenalin while they perceive the danger is still present, but once that subsides they can really become overwhelmed,” said psychology expert Rachael Sharman from the University of the Sunshine Coast.Luke Lindsay from Lifeline Queensland said they deployed counsellors to evacuation centres and they had people on the ground and over the phone ready to help.
“If you find the big stuff overwhelming, focus on the little stuff – clean one room, do a load of washing, accomplish a goal and move on to the next job,” she said.
