Zahra Mohamed is going into Grade 5 and she’s really happy to start the school year with a new backpack filled with school supplies. At the yearly event, 3,000 backpacks were handed out to children in the community in advance of the 2023-24 school year. Each bag was filled with essential supplies — paper, pens and pencils, binders — and the students were also offered shoes, a barbecue, kids’ games and more, at no cost.
The lineup for the annual back to school backpack giveaway outside the White Buffalo Youth Lodge on 20th Street West in Saskatoon stretched for the equivalent of two city blocks on Friday, August 25, 2023. “It takes a community to raise a child, as the event can’t happen without an army of volunteers … They are giving back to others,” the Saskatoon Tribal Council said a social media post.
Long before doors opened at 9 a.m. on Friday, the lineup to receive one of the 3,000 backpacks extended for approximately two blocks.Advertisement 3The Saskatoon StarPhoenix has created annewsletter that can be delivered daily to your inbox so you are up to date with the most vital news of the day.
