Businesses must cast their net widely and think outside the square to attract and retain talent, the ACS summit was told.
Australia’s technology sector must make itself more appealing to a diverse cross-section of society to attract the very best talent and drive future growth, according to business leaders.heard how many technology companies are missing out on high-calibre people because they are failing to explain the opportunities that exist within the sector. This is resulting in more vacancies than applicants and hindering business expansion plans.
McMahon says the micro reason for the challenge is simply that insufficient people want to join the technology sector at a time when it is experiencing rapid growth. Adam Schuck, the director of engineering at Canva, agrees, saying exponential growth “is a very difficult thing to fill”. Google’s Pancino agrees, saying that, during the pandemic, his company grew from having around 120,000 employees to having about 160,000 employees across the globe.
Potential new strategies include things such as looking beyond universities as sources of new talent to TAFE colleges and even high schools. Companies also need to get better at attracting people who are working in other sectors but who have transferrable skills.
