Australia, India, Pakistan and the United Nations have answered the Taliban's calls for support in response to the devastating 6.1 magnitude earthquake which has left more than 1,000 Afghans dead.

More than 1,000 people have been killed and at least 1,500 were injured in the tremor which struck about 44 kilometres from the eastern city of Khost in the early hours of Wednesday morning. The earthquake is the deadliest since 2002 but the Taliban - who overran the western-backed government in August - is struggling to finance support for devastated areas and affected residents.

Afghanistan’s Deputy Minister of State for Disaster Management Mawlawi Sharafuddin Muslim asked countries to support them as they would other nations in a time of need. Senior Taliban official Abdul Qahar Balkhi also admitted they would not be able to recover from the devastation without help from other international governments.
