Iran’s players were left furious at full-time USA IRN FIFAWorldCup
With Iran pushing forward, the ball was pumped into the box towards star striker Mehdi Taremi.
The attacker went down to the floor after seemingly feeling the arm of Celtic defender Cameron Carter-Vickers on his shoulder.Despite animated appeals for the referee to consult VAR over the decision, it was decided that no penalty would be given, effectively ending Iran’s hopes of getting back into the game.
With USA celebrating after the full-time whistle, a number of Iran players surrounded the referee to contest the decision not to award a late spot-kick, however he didn’t seem moved by the appeals. As a result, Iran have been knocked out of the World Cup after picking up just three points during their Group B campaign.
They’ll now head home and will be watching England and the USA in the next round as the two nations take on Senegal and the Netherlands respectively in the round of 16.
