The Folsom Street location will close on Oct. 21.
The company announced on Tuesday it will shutter nine stores across the U.S. on Oct. 21, including the 1690 Folsom St., because the combination of theft and organized retail crime"are threatening the safety of our team and guests."Target did not offer specifics on the reported crimes affecting its San Francisco location, nor any others.
The Examiner reached out to the SFPD for information on reported crimes affecting the San Francisco store, but did not hear back prior to publication. "Before making this decision, we invested heavily in strategies to prevent and stop theft and organized retail crime in our stores, such as adding more security team members, using third-party guard services, and implementing theft-deterrent tools across our business," Target said in a prepared statement."Despite our efforts, unfortunately, we continue to face fundamental challenges to operating these stores safely and successfully.
Target said"all eligible" employees at the stores that are scheduled to close will be given the option to transfer to other Target locations. Earlier in the month, Mayor London Breed announced The City will receive more than $17 million to help the SFPD and San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins' office fight retail theft, which business owners and City officials have cited as a major challenge slowing San Francisco's economic recovery following the COVID-19 pandemic.
