What happens to Target products when it won't allow its suppliers to raise prices? It may not be a pretty picture

. It further told its suppliers that “our expectation is that you will develop the appropriate contingency plans so that we don’t have to pass price increases along to our guests” ., adding that it “needed to take a number of steps to manage our business accordingly.”

But here’s the thing: None of them have come out—at least publicly—with statements that the tariffs are somebody else’s problem and that they’re not going to accept any increases. Other retailers, in fact, have been suggesting that this is a group problem and as such deserves a group solution. Target is also as far along on its direct sourcing model as any retailer in the business. Its Target Store Services division, known as TSS within the trade, handles a large percentage of its product developing and sourcing, bypassing traditional suppliers and working directly with factories in Asia.

These wholesaling importers can also try to get their factories to work on tighter margins, which many are doing. But margins are not exactly fat on most of this merchandise to begin with, and let’s just say China is not in the mood to be cooperative with America right now.
