Former North Melbourne player Tarryn Thomas has been approved to resume his football career at lower levels but is ineligible for AFL competition or affiliated teams in 2025.
Tarryn Thomas has been given permission to return to playing football, but he will be prohibited from representing any AFL club or their affiliated lower-level teams this year. Thomas was dismissed by North Melbourne last February due to repeated breaches of conduct and pleading guilty to violating a court order by making persistent calls to an alleged domestic violence victim.
He avoided a criminal conviction last November after police dropped a charge of using a telecommunications service to harass a woman. On Thursday, Thomas received approval to play at the VFL, WAFL, or SANFL level — or a lower grade — with the stipulation that he cannot represent a club connected to an AFL team and is ineligible for recruitment by a top-flight side through the mid-season draft. \'The AFL has been kept informed of Thomas's progress, which has included his completion of a comprehensive education and behavioral change program, and importantly a consistent change in his behavior over a period of time,' the AFL stated in a release provided to Seven. 'To be clear, Thomas is not authorized to play in the AFL competition in 2025 or for any club with an AFL affiliation in a state league competition, however, as part of his rehabilitation, he has been approved to play in football competitions below the AFL. 'He will also not be eligible for the 2025 AFL mid-season draft.' 'No decision has been made regarding Thomas's eligibility to play in the AFL in 2026 or subsequently, and that matter is not currently under consideration.' Thomas played 69 games for the Kangaroos after starting his career in 2019, with his last match in late 2023.
