Former Australian Greens leader Christine Milne is one of the former MPs helping a new cohort of women enter politics. She says while there's been 'enormous change' for women since she first entered parliament in 1989, there's still work to be done.
Eleven women have taken part in a Pathways to Politics program, run in partnership with the University of Tasmania, aimed at getting more women into politics.A group of Tasmanian women is taking part in a program designed to open the doors to working to politics.
Participants learn about the media, electoral campaign planning, how to deliver a speech in parliament, and leadership skills.Tasmania and Western Australia have this year joined the program, which has been running in all other states and territories. She said that message was strengthened by the program being accessible to women — for example masterclasses being held in the evening — and a solidarity among those taking part."It's shown us that we can make the system work for us," Ms Clark said.Young participant Bailey Falls said she also felt encouraged by the program, and motivated to pursue her ambitions to support her community.
Former Australian Greens leader Christine Milne says she hopes participation continues to grow, from people with a range of life experiences."We never spoke about our children or the challenges of being away from home, because if we had talked about it it was very much a case of 'well if you don't like it, get back to the kitchen'," Ms Milne said.
" the traditional pathways, through the law or through joining political parties, but there's a big community movement now for people to come into politics as independents or to represent a particular cause they might be interested in."
