Sophie and Lynda both know the difficulties of making ends meet once rent and everything else is paid for — and they are not alone, with one Tasmanian charity revealing 40 new families and individuals asking for help each month.

Struggling Tasmanian families' demand for fresh food and clothing is at its highest level one Launceston charity has seen in 10 years.A representative from the not-for-profit charity Strike it Out says she has "never seen demand like this before"

Launceston City Mission said it was seeing up to 25 new clients needing help each week — and many of them had jobs. "We have a range of people coming through. Some have employment but they're finding they can't hold onto their private rentals, with prices increasing when the lease ends."For Sophie McKenna, finding enough money to pay her weekly rent and buy groceries is tough."I'm trying to be positive about things, but it is difficult," she said."Come pay week, I have a bit … but then the next week I can't really spend anything.

"One of my sons is still at home … he does help out financially for food and things but he also has his own bills to pay and his own responsibilities," she said.The Strike It Out trailer with free lockers for use by homeless people.
