A proposal to ban ambulance ramping at Tasmanian hospitals, put forward by the Tasmanian Liberals, is effectively scrapped by the Department of Health after the nursing and midwifery union raised concerns about safety and staffing.
The Tasmanian branch of the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation says a mandate from the Tasmanian Liberals for ambulance paramedics to "offload every patient within an hour of arrival" at emergency departments has been withdrawn by the Department of Health.
Following the announcement of Tasmania's state election being called for March 23, the Liberals followed up with a plan for "ramping to be banned". But the new "mandated transfer of care procedure", as it was known, was criticised by medical specialists and unions, with one doctor describing such a protocol as "unsafe and unhealthy for all the staff and patients involved".
"There was also a commitment to review workloads and staffing across the state's hospitals … in conjunction to the non-mandatory implementation of the transfer of care procedure.Premier Jeremy Rockliff says his government will get the transfer down to 30 minutes "over the next few years".
