The federal environment minister has told the Tasmanian government she is committed to Hobart remaining the home base of the RSV Nuyina, but that this goal is currently being blocked.Tasmanian premier Jeremy Rockliff says he will work through the issue with all parties "like adults".
"This is … 14 times more than the Commonwealth currently pays and there have been no costings provided to back up this request," Ms Plibersek wrote.Ms Plibersek has pushed back against cost proposals for the redevelopment, saying they were 14 times more expensive than the Commonwealth was currently paying.
The Tasmanian Labor leader has also accused the premier of risking 1,000 jobs and questioned whether he had lost control of the state-owned TasPorts. In question time on Thursday, Tasmanian Labor leader Dean Winter accused the state government of putting more than 1,000 jobs at risk. "We will work through with TasPorts, the state government, state growth and indeed Canberra as well. We recognise the value of Antarctica and the precinct opportunity, but also berth 6, Wharf 6 as well."Liberal senator for Tasmania Jonno Duniam also weighed in, arguing Ms Plibersek "has been exposed as not being genuine in her claims that she wants to keep Tasmania as the gateway to Antarctica".
Liberal senator Jonno Dunniam suggested Ms Plibersek was "playing politics", while the premier said all parties would work through the matter "like adults".In a statement, TasPorts said it was committed to Hobart being a gateway to Antarctica and the Southern Ocean and was ready to continue negotiations.
