Tassie AFL team clears major political hurdle after opponents’ stadium backflip

With the clock ticking on the Tasmania Devils’ entry into the AFL, a major hurdle has been cleared after a naysayer reversed their opposition to the development of a new stadium just over a year after the new club was granted a provisional licence .

The Tasmanian Government has agreed to contribute $375m to the project, with the Federal Government also pledging $240m to help unlock the Macquarie Point build, which could create up to 4,000 new jobs. But six weeks after the election, with Winter now the opposition leader after the Liberal Government led by Jeremy Rockliff formed a minority government, he has reversed course.

The Tasmanian Planning Commission is currently assessing plans associated with the development, which will need to pass both houses of the state government. It is scheduled to be completed between 2028 and 2029, which means Bellerive Oval in Hobart and York Park in Launceston will initially host games for the new club.Just over a year after the AFL granted the Tasmania Devils a provisional licence, the club’s executive director Kath McCann said on SEN Tasmania on Monday the time has flown.

“In addition to that, the sustainability of the club financially is important around the infrastructure, so we need to make sure the infrastructure that is developed will work for us.”
