Instead, a struggling Karlson, known at the time as Cecil George Edwards, turned to the waiting tv cameras and bellowed out the words which would immortalise him forever in Australian culture. As it turned out, authorities did not appear to know the charges either, with reports at the time suggesting he had been arrested on suspicion of being a criminal high on Queensland Police's wanted list.
Mr Karlson and the famous comments have featured on everything from clothing to wine bottles, in music videos and a racehorse was even christened with the name Democracy Manifest.
