In the government’s favour, there was no appetite among the motoring industry and economists to cut excise and Labor and the Greens opted to sit on the fence. “It is so important that we look for responsible ways, affordable ways, to ease cost of living pressures on Australians,” he said. “The Greens are very concerned about the cost of living impact that comes from fossil fuel dependency. This is why we need to rapidly shift to electric vehicles,” a spokesman for Greens leader Adam Bandt said.“Clive Palmer and Gina Rinehart’s companies get their fuel excise refunded, so no wonder motorists are fuming.”“Cutting excise will do nothing to fix the global factors pushing up prices, but it will harm our ability to make our transport network safer and more efficient,” he said.
But Mr Morrison was guarded against touching fuel tax, saying it was due to events beyond his government’s control.
