Internal Revenue Service building. Treasury Department officials recently announced the Internal Revenue Service is going to have major challenges, which may lead to struggles for both tax preparers and taxpayers. Nevertheless, tax season is starting Monday, Jan. 24 and taxpayers can start filing 2021 taxes. Here’s what you need to know.
The IRS has experienced budget cuts and the ongoing coronavirus pandemic that may cause delays with tax refunds. Stimulus-related workload issues may also contribute to delays with tax refunds. Most years the IRS only has a backlog of 1 million returns, though this year it’s several times this figure. Though, officials did not give an estimate, according toThe IRS reported on Dec. 23, 2021, that there were 6 million unprocessed returns, and 2 million unprocessed amended tax returns.
Though, this past year the filing season ended with 35 million unprocessed returns. The IRS only answered 9% of calls, and taxpayers had a lack of assistance. Due to the pandemic, many in-person call centers closed, while budgets decreased staff by 25%. “By definition, no matter how much more efficient you are, you can’t lose 25 percent of the workforce and assume you can do the same volume of work. It’s a problem across the board — information technology; revenue agents; people answering the phones,” John Koskinen, the former commissioner of the IRSTaxpayers have until April 18 to file their 2021 taxes. The IRS recommends filing electronically and requesting direct deposit instead of filing via paper.
