Elon Musk has scrapped Twitter's original verification system, forcing people to pay a subscription fee to keep their blue ticks. The billionaire says he is paying for three celebrities to stay verified, but plenty of others are clinging on to theirs too.

Pre-takeover, Twitter had about 300,000 verified users under the original blue tick system, which required users to prove they were who they said they were.
