TCU stunned No. 2 Michigan 51-45 on Saturday night in State Farm Stadium in the College Football Playoff semifinals, in following up a 31-28 overtime loss to KSU in the Big 12 title game on Dec. 3. “We used that as a little bit of motivation,” said TCU linebacker Dee Winters, a former Burton High star who was named defensive player of the CFP semifinals game thanks to his interception returned for a touchdown to go with three tackles for lost yards. “We feel like the Big 12 is a very physical conference, and we wanted to come out and showcase what the Big 12 is all about.”
“We talked about all week leading up to the game how important it would be to play physical, and I thought we were definitely the most physical team on the field,” Dykes said. “Our ability to run the ball … we almost outrushed Michigan by 100 yards . Our ability to stop the run was the difference in the ballgame.”
TCU was 5-7 last season and then-coach Gary Patterson had stepped down when the Horned Frogs were 3-5. TCU was picked seventh in a Big 12 preseason poll this year and overcame odds all season long to become the first school from the state to play for a national title since Texas following the 2009 regular season against Alabama .
