A video of US teachers scrambling for one dollar bills has gone viral, with social media users horrified at the “humiliating” game.
The thread that followed depicted the “dystopian” competition as it unfolded. It began with game officials dumping trash bags of what appears to be 5,000 $1 bills onto a rug in the middle of the ice rink. The stadium announcer’s voice is mostly inaudible as 10 individuals in matching shirts walk to the middle of the ice where the pile of cash was laid.
Another added sarcastically, “Teachers, on their hands and knees, grabbing for $1 bills to buy classroom supplies, for the amusement of a crowd. Yeah, totally uplifting and fun not at all totally dystopian.” The degrading display hit too close to home for some: “As a teacher, I find this humiliating. Scrambling against others on the ground for a few $1 bills? How about honouring teachers with genuine donations rather than turning us into silly entertainment for fans?”
