C. - Teachers like Heather Stambaugh regularly spend hundreds of dollars out of their own pockets each year for classroom expenses their districts don’t pay for, covering everything from pencils, to tissues, to snacks for students who find it hard to focus in class because they’re hungry.
“On average, I go through 100 to 150 pencils, and that’s if I’m paying attention to how many times I’m opening pencil packs,” she said of her yearly expenses. “Tissues, wipes and cleaners, some districts ration or restrict access to these things because they’re out of their allotment by winter break. Kids go through a lot of wipes and tissues to try to stay healthy.”
