Teal independent MP Dr Sophie Scamps has denied siding with the Greens over opposition to the Labor Government’s draft climate change bill.
The Albanese Government is expected to table its climate change bill in the first week of Parliament where it will formally legislate its 43 per cent emissions reduction target.
However, the teal independent said she would be open to support the bill if there was a mechanism to boost the target going forward. “We need to have a mechanism where we can review the targets every five years and then if it is necessary we can ratchet up so that we can meet those targets,” she said.
When asked whether she was more closely aligned to the Greens’ position than Labor’s, Dr Scamps said she was working with the government and had proposals for the legislation to change.
