The Victorian Liberal Party is providing support to independents in government-held electorates ahead of the state election in the hope of stripping seats from Labor.that for 18 months the party has been training prominent locals to run as independents in Labor-held seats like Melton, Werribee, Dandenong and Premier Daniel Andrews’ south-eastern seat of Mulgrave, which is held by a 12 per cent margin.
The Liberals believe a prospective candidate in Mulgrave, who was not yet ready to be announced, is well-known locally and will garner significant support. But the revelation that the Liberals are providing assistance to other candidates could be used by the Labor Party to question their independence.
Community independents running on climate change and integrity upended the two-party system at the federal election in May, spawning an existential worry for the Liberals whoHowever, it remains to be seen whether the teals’ momentum can translate into state politics, where political debate is geared towards more practical themes like health and public transport rather than values-based issues of climate change and women’s rights.
“The Coalition in Victoria support the [state integrity agency IBAC] and most of the Victorian government’s climate change agenda. So it is much clearer what they were trying to do federally.” According to recipients of calls, polling firm Redbridge this week began canvassing state seats where the Liberals suffered large swings including Hawthorn, Kew, Sandringham, Caulfield and Guy’s seat of Bulleen.
