The federal government is facing fresh pressure over its housing policies after seven teal independents urged a rethink of its plan to build 1.2 million homes.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has spent the week defending his purchase of a multi-million dollar home, but the focus has returned to the housing policy debate.Housing Minister Clare O'Neil recently convened a roundtable with industry leaders to discuss ways to reduce the barriers to building more homes.
It echoes the criticisms levelled at the target this week by the Coalition's housing spokesperson Michael Sukkar, who said there was "no way the government will get anywhere near 1.2 million" and pledged to scrap the target if elected. "Payments can be for both levels of government, but the emphasis should be on reaching enablers with payment when those enablers are reached."Ms O'Neil, who took on the housing portfolio in July 2022, has embraced the ambition of the government's target.
As well as financial incentives, the federal government is directly funding housing supply through its social and affordable housing fund, which is bearing its first fruits via grants to support the construction of 13,700 rent-capped homes. "For the first time in a long time, we've got a Commonwealth government that has stepped into housing and that's trying to provide leadership, and we are tackling this problem from every single angle."
