Former NRL star Jarryd Hayne has claimed vindication after his rape charges were dropped, bringing to an end a near-six-year legal battle including three trials and two convictions. The 36-year-old described the fight to clear his name as a “rollercoaster” as sexual assault charges against him were formally withdrawn. Hayne had convictions on two rape charges overturned by an appeals court earlier in June, after which prosecutors revealed they would not proceed to a fourth trial.
But earlier in June the NSW Court of Criminal Appeal quashed Hayne’s convictions on the basis a judge erred in not allowing the complainant to be further cross-examined during the trial. Before Friday’s hearing, the Office of The Director of Public Prosecutions said the decision not to proceed to a fourth trial was made in accordance with prosecution guidelines without disclosing specific reasons for the decision.
