Elon Musk ’s SpaceX company has achieved a historic milestone as tech billionaire Jared Isaacman has become the first person to complete a spacewalk. The Polaris Dawn crew, named after the three-star constellation, ventured 738km above the Earth’s surface before Isaacman stepped out of the Dragon space capsule.
SpaceX engineers Anna Menon and Sarah Gillis were also aboard, as well as retired United States Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Scott Poteet. The mission, funded by Isaacman, is the second privately crewed flight from SpaceX as Musk's company explores ways to reduce the cost of space travel. Shortly after launching into space, the Polaris Dawn crew began their preparations for the spacewalk, conducting a two-day pre-breathe process to prevent decompression sickness by acclimating them to lower pressures and slowly increasing their oxygen levels.
