Sold-off services company Appen held its technology day on Thursday, but it started with a 40-minute glitch thanks to a hardware malfunction.

Investors in artificial intelligence data services provider Appen had a new reason to be dismayed by the performance of the beleaguered business on Thursday, after it suffered a hardware issue that caused tech day presentations to be delayed by almost 40 minutes.

Appen CEO Mark Brayan has been working to transform the company by investing in automating processes. The company, which provides annotated data to big tech giants such as Google, Facebook and Microsoft to help them train AI algorithms used to improve things like search engine functionality, targeted advertising and image and voice recognition, has been sold off heavily in the past 22 months and is down more than 85 per cent since August 2020.

“When I joined Appen, we positioned ourselves as a training data company, and I believe we were underselling ourselves when we did that,” Ms Sagiraju said. “Building capability that customers can use in a self-serve way is a huge big change. We have the expertise, we’ve been doing it for 25 years, and we know how to do this for customers, but we’re building the capability so that customers can do it themselves.”
