Tongal’s Jessica Sherry and Ingrid Vining discuss the expanded access and appetite for diversity in in Hollywood and creative industries facilitated by technology
. Borrowing a basic tenet from the sharing economy, Tongal is a global community that allows those who need content to connect with those who create it. As Tongal VP of Community Ingrid Vining pointed out: “Hollywood was built on the freelance economy.” The company is simply using technology to make the creative process accessible on a global scale.
Vining attributed much of this to what she calls a “season of extreme choice.” According to Vining, innovation in technology and the proliferation of screens and channels over the last decade has produced a seemingly unlimited amount of content for viewing. Of course, this increase in choice has resulted in smaller audiences pursuing their narrower interests.
Layer on top of that the global reach of technology, and you realize all of this can be done remotely from different parts of the world. For Sherry, this means success no longer hangs on who you know, but rather the hustle, ideas and talent that define you. Vining said there are many reasons for this shift in power. The falling cost of education and equipment is part of it. She explains that people can learn how to make movies on YouTube, purchase pro-grade drones on Amazon, and shoot Sundance-worthy projects on an iPhone.
