The smash happened on the northbound carriageway near Chorley at around 4.30pm yesterday . Emergency services rushed to the scene after a Ford Focus collided with a Ford Kuga, then hit the central reservation and a bridge.
The driver of the Focus - a male aged in his late teens from Wesham - was rushed to hospital with a serious injury, police said. The driver of the Kuga and a passenger, who were both from Manchester, suffered minor injuries. The motorway was closed off on the northbound side between junction eight and nine until the early hours of this morning as investigations were carried out. It was fully reopened at around 12.45am, according to National Highways.
Police are now asking any witnesses, or anyone with dashcam footage of the crash, to come forward as they try to 'piece together' what happened. Sgt Helen Parkinson, of the Lancashire Roads Policing Unit, said: "This collision has left a young man in hospital with a serious injury and we are determined to piece together exactly what occurred.
