A teenage girl has died after she was trapped under a light rail tram in Haymarket late last night. Police are currently investigating what led to the incident. 9News MORE:

Emergency services were called to George Street at Haymarket after reports a girl had become trapped under a light rail tram at the Chinatown stop just after midnight.

After police and fire crews freed the 16-year-old, she was treated by paramedics for critical injuries but died at the scene.The driver of the tram, a 52-year-old man, was taken to hospital for mandatory testing."A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner," police said. One of the witnesses who was the first to call emergency services told Today passengers on board the tram tried to assist the girl.All light rail services are operating between Central and Circular Quay again.
