A 16-year-old boy accused of murdering a 70-year-old grandmother during a carjacking will face a committal hearing on March 14. The incident has raised concerns about juvenile justice laws in Queensland.
A teenage boy who is accused of killing a 70-year-old grandmother during a carjacking faces more time in custody before a magistrate decides if he will stand trial. The victim, Vyleen Joan White , died after being stabbed in the chest outside a shopping center in Redbank Plains , west of Brisbane, on February 3. Police claim that White was killed while her 2009 model Hyundai Getz hatchback was being stolen.
The 16-year-old from Bellbird Park has been charged with one count each of murder and unlawful use of a motor vehicle, as well as three counts of stealing. A committal mention was held at Ipswich Children's Court on Tuesday, but the youth did not appear in person or via video link from custody. The prosecutor, Chris Cook, informed Magistrate Melanie Ho that potential dates for a committal hearing had been discussed with the youth's solicitors at Hannay Lawyers, and all necessary disclosures had been made. Magistrate Ho ordered the youth to face a committal hearing on March 14, and he will be required to appear in court. He was remanded in custody. The incident has led to changes in Queensland's juvenile justice laws and was referenced in a debate on youth crime between then-LNP opposition leader David Crisafulli and then-premier Steven Miles
