A teenager suffered serious spinal injuries after diving off a wharf in Terrigal, NSW, and was airlifted to hospital. NSW Ambulance issued a heatwave warning for the state.

A teenage boy has been airlifted to hospital in NSW after an incident in Terrigal left him with serious spinal injuries. The CareFlight Helicopter was called to the beachside suburb of Terrigal shortly after 3 pm on Saturday after a teenage boy suffered serious spinal injuries when diving off the wharf and into the water. NSW Ambulance paramedics and CareFlight's specialist doctor provided critical care to the patient before he was transferred to the helicopter.

The boy has been flown to Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney and is in a serious but stable condition. The incident came as NSW Ambulance issued a severe heatwave warning for the Illawarra, South Coast, Southern Tablelands, Snowy Mountains and Riverina districts - with the hot temperatures expected to hit Sydney and the surrounding areas from Sunday. 'During this heatwave it’s vital to check on those most at risk right now, including elderly family members, babies and young children, pregnant people, and those with pre-existing medical conditions,' NSW Ambulance said in a statement
